Twin Tube Tunnel between Thane and Borivali
Construction of 11.84 Km long Twin Tube Road Tunnel (Ch 0+00 to Ch 11+84 Km) between Thane to Borivali
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has undertaken the construction of proposed Twin Tube Tunnel between Thane and Borivali under Sanjay Gandhi National Park which will create direct connection between Western Express Highway at Borivali side and Thane Ghodbander Road at Thane side. The total length of the said project is 11.85 km out of which 10.25 km is tunnel and 1.60 km is approach road. The Diameter of tunnel is 13.3 m. (2 lanes + 1 emergency lane). The journey from Thane and Borivali will reduce by 12 km and about 1 hour time will be saved. Direct connectivity will also establish which will decongest the traffic.
The Administrative approval to project cost amounting to Rs. 16,600.40 Crore is granted in its 154th Authority meeting held on 10th March 2023.
In 275th Executive Committee Meeting held on 04th May, 2023 M/s. Megha Engineering Infrastructures Ltd was appointed as the contractor with the lowest bids of Rs. 6,178 Cr. for Pkg-1 and Rs. 5,879 Cr. for Pkg-2. The commencement date of work is dated 19th May 2023.
M/s Hill-TATA (JV) has been appointed as General Consultant for subject project and Notice to Proceed (NTP) was issued on 20th June 2024.
The project was declared as a “Project Significant for Urban Transport” and a “Project of Vital Importance” by the Government of Maharashtra, with a grant for interest-free secondary loan assistance, as per the Government Resolution dated 14th October 2024.
At Package‑1 (Borivali Side), the casting yard setup is currently in progress. Also, at Package-1 PAP rehabilitation is in progress. At Package 1 (Borivali Side) Piling activity has commenced at Launching shaft area and excavation of TBM Launching shaft will start after PAP shifting is completed.
Major land acquisition at Package-2 (Thane side) is completed. Further, the casting yard has been fully completed and is now operational. The excavation of TBM Launching Shaft at Package-2 is completed.
Procurement of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) from M/s Herrenknecht, Chennai, has been completed. Details of the same are as below:
• TBM-1 named as Nayak, allocated for the Thane side is arrived at the site on 17th June 2025 and the same is launched with auspicious hands of Hon’ble Chief Minister on 07th April 2026. Excavation of tunnel is being started.
• TBM-2 named as Arjuna, allocated for the Thane side is arrived at the site TBM assembly work is in progress. Physical Progress of the project: 11.49% (Till March 2026) Financial Progress of the project: 10.36% (Till February 2026) An amount of Rs. 3630.96 Crore has been incurred on this project till March 2026.
